Sahitya Akademi, the premier organization in India that has been working incessantly to promote Indian Literature around the world, brought yet another rare treat to the connoisseurs of Literature in the city with a reading session by none other than Sai Paranjpye, one of India’s most revered playwrights and film directors, who has given the Indian cinema unforgettable award-winning movies like Sparsh, Katha, Chasme Buddoor, and Disha!
Sai Paranjpye read select sections from her latest work, Birwa, and had the audience mesmerized with her inimitable storytelling abilities. The sections that she chose to read were the ones that could touch the heart of almost anybody and force them hang on to every word that she said. And in the end, the audience was left yearning for more!
Said Ms.Sai Paranjpye, “This evening we are presenting the Hindi translation by Rekha Deshpande, of my recent Marathi play ‘Ivalese Ropa’. What an honour to have the prestigious Sahitya Akademi host this reading. It is a privilege to have Delhi’s veteran actor Banwari Taneja co-present this reading with me.”
Sahitya Akademi undertakes various initiatives in its ongoing endeavour to promote Literature amongst the masses and showcase the works of various authors on a national platform. As a part of its latest initiatives, Sahitya Akademi recently conducted the “Indo-Czech Writers’ Meet” and the “North-East and Northern Poets’ Meet” at the ongoing New Delhi World Book Festival 2014.
Mr. K. Sreenivasarao, Secretary, Sahitya Akademi, spoke about the growing opportunities for and the need to provide support, recognition and visibility to the Indian writers. He also announced that the Sahitya Akademi will stay true to its commitment and do everything possible to promote writers both in India and abroad under it’s flagship programme, Indian Literature Abroad (ILA).
