Dance music’s latest record label is set to begin with a big What if .
After almost a year in the making, House DJ and producer George James is releasing his debut single What If on his own unique imprint, LABL Recordings.
Founded in April, LABL Recordings targets red-tape wary, young and talented music producers. “Novelists are by-passing traditional publishing houses through e-publishing – avoiding unnecessary time and cost delays. Its time for musicians to do the same,” says George.
“As a new artist and producer in the music industry looking to go public, I took a long, hard look at industry norms and procedures and then took the accepted and spun it around! To my knowledge, I am probably one of only a few unknown artists to enter the music industry under my own record label. This is unheard of!”
What If marks the first of many big room club tracks that will be released in the coming months through LABL recordings. The label is likely to focus on genres that include progressive house, electro house, and tech house.
On the enigmatic single, What If, George says that he wrote the melody from a skyscraper in Dubai while mesmerised by the gravity-defying, space-age skyline. He came up with the chorus on a beach in Australia, and then completely forgot about his creation. “Months later, after a hectic party in Cape Town Town, he played the track to a mate, thrashed out some ideas, and woke up with a completed track in the morning. The mix was fine-tuned in Johannesburg and sent off to one of the big boys in London for mastering,” says George.
George 23, was born in Johannesburg and presently resides between Johannesburg and Dubai. However in December, he is relocating to London.
His interest in music started at 10 when he cut his first disc at school. By 15, DJing was his established hobby and after some formal training, George was playing at parties and night clubs. Since turning 18, George has been in high demand in clubs all over South Africa. In the past year, his focus has been on producing. His work has been heavily influenced by the modern European house but draws inspiration also from Middle-Eastern staccato melodies and Dirty Dutch baselines. Individual artists George admires include Hardwell, Nicky Romero & Calvin Harris
LABL’s goal is to de-construct the complex dance music world and re-invent it according to a new logic. LABL Recordings has been crafted for artists by artists.
What If will be available from Sunday 29 September at 10am GMT at on-line music stores that include iTunes, Beatport, Spotify, Amazon, Google Play, and many more.
